The frame team is designing a steering system to be responsive, comfortable to operate, and reliable. It also must not interfere with the driver's ability to operate the pedals, which is tested at the competition using a template test, and have as little free play as possible. To achieve this, the support for the steering column is attached to the top of the frame and only one universal joint is used in the column. Also, in order to ensure the steering column will not fail under different turning conditions, the team completed a stress analysis with 90 ft/lbs of torque applied. The team concluded under this condition, the steering column will not fail.
